Endophytic Fungi Associated with Coffee Leaves in China Exhibited In Vitro Antagonism against Fungal and Bacterial Pathogens

Abstract: Coffee endophytes have been studied for almost 74 years, and several studies have demonstrated coffee-endophytic fungi with antibacterial and antifungal potential for human and plant pathogens. In this study, we isolated and identified a total of 235 strains of endophytic fungi from coffee leaf tissues collected in four coffee plantations in Pu’er city, Yunnan province, China. Molecular identification was carried out using maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed space… Show more

“…Some Nigrospora species can act as an antagonist against fungal and bacterial plant pathogens [57,58]. Phomalactone from Nigrospora sphaerica exhibits a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against human and phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi [59], such as Phytophthora infestans (Mont.)…”

“…Four fungal isolates (YH-4, YH-10, YH-16, and YH-26) were evaluated for antifungal activity against pathogens ( Alternaria alternata , Candida albicans , Fusarium oxysporum , Botrytis cinerea , and Pythium ultimum ) that were kindly obtained from the Department of Botany and Microbiology, University of King Saud, using a dual culture approach [ 26 ]. Thus, pathogens were inoculated in the center of PDA plates, and representative endophytic isolates (5 mm) were seeded on three corners of PDA plates for analysis.…”

“…strain PTE‐7 and Daldinia sp. strain T5E‐1‐3, have an antagonistic effect against S. enterica with an inhibition rate of approximately 60%, tested by dual‐culture assays in Petri dishes (L. Lu, Karunarathna, et al, 2022). In contrast, Glomus intraradices , an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, did not show an inhibitory effect either the survival or the internalization of E. coli O157:H7, S. newport , S. typhimurium , S. saintpaul , and S. montevideo in romaine lettuce sprouts and in the soil, in none of the evaluated times (1, 8, 15, and 22 days).…”
