Endoscopic ultrasonic evaluation of the prostate using a transrectal probe: prospective evaluation and acoustic characterization.

Abstract: Transrectal sonography of the normal prostate demonstrates a gland that has low-level homogeneous echoes. Benign and malignant prostatic disease causes disruption of this normal texture. A prospective study was performed to determine the ability of ultrasound to detect focal defects accurately. The specific histologic diagnoses of the lesions were obtained by ultrasonically guided transperineal biopsy or prostatic resection. Acoustic characterization following pathologic evaluation demonstrated certain echogen… Show more

“…Otherwise, the signs and symptoms are commonly those found in prostatitis, and differentiation between the two entities is difficult. Cross-sectional radiologic imaging has made it possible to detect morphologic changes of the prostate [3][4][5][6][7]. Prostatic abscesses can be detected on CT with IV contrast enhancement [7].…”

“…Prostatic abscesses can be detected on CT with IV contrast enhancement [7]. Sonography provides detailed images of the prostate at lower expense and risk [5][6][7]. MR imaging has certain advantages over CT, including better contrast resolution and multiplanar imaging capabilities.…”

“…The focal abnormalities were not grouped according to echogenicity, since neither echoic, hypoechoic, nor mixed echoes are specific for malignancy [15], All glands with abnormal parenchymal echoes were examined bioptically with the fine-needle technique. Five out of 13 patients with abnormal foci had a positive biopsy, and these cases were defined as true recurrences with a need for addi tional treatment.…”

“…In the early 1980s, ERUS was initially introduced to clinical practice to evaluate the prostate [1] . In 1985, Hildebrant et al [2] firstly introduced ERUS as a method to stage rectal carcinoma.…”
