Endotoxin in the conscious piglet: Its effects on some general and gastrointestinal myoelectrical parameters

Abstract: The effect of an intravenous bolus injection of endotoxin, 0.1, 1 or 10 micrograms/kg, on rectal temperature, clinical appearance, haematological parameters, and on gastrointestinal electrical activity was examined in 11 conscious piglets of 4-5 weeks of age, with implanted electrodes in the antrum pylori, duodenum, jejunum and ileum. All doses resulted in a significant and dose-dependent increase in rectal temperature, in pronounced clinical signs and in distinct changes in haematological values. These includ… Show more

“…The LPS-induced changes in clinical and haematological parameters as well as the inhibitory effect of LPS on gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity corresponded to our previous observations (De Saedeleer et aL, 1991a). In a previous study in piglets on the effect of LPS at 0.1 and 1 #g/kg IV, randomly administered using the same parameters as in the present experiment, the development of a tachyphylactic evolution of the response to LPS was minimal when there was a 1-week interval between the successive administrations of LPS (De Saedeleer et al, 1990).…”

“…The integrated activity was evaluated by planimetry of the area under the curve (AUC) at half-hourly intervals and likewise compared with time-matched segments on control days (De Saedeleer et aL, 1991a). Since no significant differences occurred between time segments on the control days, the values were pooled.…”

“…Over-reaction to LPS has been implicated in clinical conditions such as septic shock, inflammatory bowel disease, ARDS, and other local or systemic inflammatory disorders (De Saedeleer et al, 1991). Quercetin, as a flavonoid molecule ubiquitous in nature, was reported to ameliorate LPS-induced systemic inflammation in mice (Liao and Lin, 2015) and suppress inflammation in LPS-induced acute lung injury in rats (Huang et al, 2015).…”
