Energy and Performance Analysis of Lossless Compression Algorithms for Wireless EMG Sensors

Abstract: Electromyography (EMG) sensors produce a stream of data at rates that can easily saturate a low-energy wireless link such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), especially if more than a few EMG channels are being transmitted simultaneously. Compressing data can thus be seen as a nice feature that could allow both longer battery life and more simultaneous channels at the same time. A lot of research has been done in lossy compression algorithms for EMG data, but being lossy, artifacts are inevitably introduced in the … Show more

“…Alternatively, it is possible to communicate data through the same coil used for inductive charging, which may allow patients to offload data more frequently at home while their device recharges 101 . Some research‐grade devices and nonimplanted devices, like insulin pumps, utilize another communication strategy: Bluetooth, allowing them to interface with a smart phone 102,103 . Bluetooth is advantageous because data can be collected continuously, without the need for the patient to sit still.…”

“…Other exceptions are Banerjee and Singh, 17 where lossless compression methods for ECG and PPG signals are proposed, and Nakatsuka et al, 18 where compression of the less common signals; intravesical pressure and rectum pressure are investigated. Some papers 19,20 propose compression methods for electromyography (EMG) signals.…”
