Energy efficient virtual MIMO communication for wireless sensor networks

Abstract: Virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques are used for energy efficient communication in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose energy efficient routing based on virtual MIMO. We investigate virtual MIMO for both fixed and variable rates. We use a cluster based virtual MIMO cognitive model with the aim of changing operational parameters (constellation size) to provide energy efficient communication. We determine the routing path based on the virtual MIMO communication cost to delay … Show more

“…There are two types of communication in a cooperative MIMO relay network: local/intra communication at virtual MIMO nodes and long-haul/inter communication between virtual MIMO nodes [3,28]. The following MIMO scheme cooperatively relays k(k ≥ 1) data from a cluster A to a destination cluster, where A can be the base station when it sends a query to the source cluster or the source cluster when it sends the source data back to the base station: MIMO Scheme for data relay between virtual nodes A and B…”

“…The energy consumption is optimized in this paper [4] based on virtual MIMO technology by optimizing the constellation size, and the first sensor node death time is delayed. Although multi-hop transmission mode is adopted in this paper [2][3][4], the method of energy consumption optimization is enumeration without flexibility.…”

“…The energy consumption is optimized in this paper [4] based on virtual MIMO technology by optimizing the constellation size, and the first sensor node death time is delayed. Although multi-hop transmission mode is adopted in this paper [2][3][4], the method of energy consumption optimization is enumeration without flexibility. This paper [5] proposes a routing scheme based on ant colony algorithm to reduce the network energy consumption through analyzing the algorithm of Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), but the total energy consumption is not exact without considering the circuit energy consumption.…”

“…By the use of cooperative techniques, wireless devices are allowed to share and use the network resources in a more efficient way [6,10,[12][13][14][15][16]. As an example, the authors in [14] present a cooperative method to share the network resources and manage interference among femtocells in a distributed manner.…”

“…The theoretical aspects of virtual MIMO have previously been covered in [17,18]. Work on virtual MIMO which considers energy efficiency as an optimization metric can be found in [8,12,19]. The authors in [12,19] illustrate the energy savings obtained when virtual MIMO techniques are used compared with non-cooperative approaches in wireless sensor networks.…”
