Energy in the perspective of the sustainable development: The 2000W society challenge

Abstract: As energy plays a central role in the world development, it represents as well a major challenge for sustainable development. Today, more than 80 % of the primary energy consumption is based on fossil fuels and the share is likely to remain high in the future. Even if technology developments will reduce the specific consumption, the world energy demand is likely to increase in line with its population. Energy and material efficiency and the integration of the renewable resources will therefore have to play a m… Show more

“…For setting the threshold level, the concept of a 2000 W society (per person) has been proposed as a target for industrialized countries [45] implying a reduction from 50% to 90% of per capita energy consumption from current figures. While this number was originally conceived as gross available energy and does not distinguish the energy investment as does the energy economy framework discussed in Section 2, it is reasonable to adopt it as a minimum net available energy threshold.…”

“…Sgouridis and Kennedy (2010) developed the Ergo concept for application to the Masdar City -a mid-size development aspiring to be net zero carbon near Abu Dhabi (Reiche, 2010). Communities like Zug in Switzerland are engaging in a fundamental debate on whether to strive toward creating a 2000-W society (Marechal et al, 2005). The concept advocates that western societies should converge toward the estimated global average primary energy consumption per capita, which represents a 70% reduction from current energy consumption levels in Switzerland.…”

“…To further explain the targets of the development of LCTs in China, we designed four indicative scenarios of the annual CO 2 emissions of a Chinese town over its life cycle, referring to previous studies on energy consumption and CO 2 emissions [42,43], as illustrated in Fig. 14.…”
