Energy regeneration technique for electric vehicles driven by a brushless DC motor

Abstract: The development of energy regeneration capability in electric vehicles can extend their driving range making them a competent alternative for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. In this study, a novel energy regeneration technique, called a two-boost method, for electric vehicles driven by a brushless DC (BLDC) motor, a widely used motor in vehicular technology, is proposed. Based on this technique, the BLDC motor driver, which is selected to be a three-phase inverter, is converted into two simul… Show more

“…The parameter values to be substituted are R = 1.544 ohms, V⁄∆t = 1% and f = 10,000 Hz. By substituting equation (10) with Eq. ( 24) and other parameter values, then, 𝐶 𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.7 (1.544)(0.01)10,000 (25) 𝐶 𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 4.54 𝑥 10 −3 𝐹 (26)…”

“…In [21], a slip-rate control strategy based on sliding mode control and braking force control strategy based on the Economic Commission for Europe's (ECE) regulation are presented to improve the efficiency of recovered electrical energy. A novel two-boost method which is exploiting the motor converter as a cascade connected two-level boost converter is asserted for BLDC motor regenerative braking [22]. In [23], a downshifting strategy is described to improve recovery energy by adjusting operating regions of electric motor for electric and hybrid vehicles with stepped automatic transmissions.…”

“…In recent years, due to the rising awareness of environmental protection, electric motorcycles have gradually become the development focus. Permanent magnet brushless motors are widely used because of their benefits in maintenance, high power density, and simple control methods [1,2,3,4,5,6]. The three-phase full-bridge inverter with six active switches is the most common topology of the motor driver.…”
