“…Henriques and Sadorsky (1999) stressed that the managerial perception of stakeholder pressure differs statistically between different environmental commitment profiles. Finally, yet other studies examine the extent to which firms should develop a cooperative relationship with their stakeholders (Altman & Petkus, 1994;Graf! e-Buckens & Hinton, 1998).…”

“…DesJardins (1998) suggests that business has a moral responsibility to act in an ecologically sustainable manner. Stakeholders are assigned a dominant role as demanders of environmental responsibility (see e.g., Grafe-Buckens and Hinton, 1998;Madsen and Ulhoi, 2001). Fineman (2001) suggests that some green voices, or green stakeholders, are charging managers with moral responsibility for the environment.…”

“…Stakeholder theory offers stakeholder interests and interaction as a basis for such common ground. In the field of CEM rhetoric typical of the stakeholder approach and thinking has been widely utilized (see e.g., Fineman, 2001;Grafe-Buckens and Hinton, 1998;Madsen and Ulhoi, 2001;Nielsen, 2001). Environmental issues have been described as a phenomenon that is strongly charged with values (Wolff, 1998).…”

“…Typically the power and influence of stakeholders is stressed as a precondition for corporate environmental responses (see e.g., Grafe-Buckens and Hinton, 1998;Madsen and Ulhoi, 2001). Bansal and Roth (2000) point out that several studies have identified stakeholder pressures as one of the strongest motives for corporate greening.…”
“…This kind of communication creates mutual trust and reliance, and leads to legitimacy for the business operations (cf. Grafé-Buckens and Hinton, 1998;Mikkilä, 2006). By continuous communication (Barney, 2003) and stakeholder inclusion (Wheeler and Sillanpää, 1997) a company can affirm and retain trust among its stakeholders.…”
Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyse (1) how a company communicates its corporate responsibility activities through press releases and (2) how these activities are then presented by media in newspaper articles. Our analysis is targeted at an empirical case of building a pulp mill in Uruguay. The data consists of the company's press releases and of the newspaper articles published in the biggest quality daily in Finland related to the construction project. The data analysis is conducted as a qualitative content analysis. Corporate responsibility activities are identified utilising the three dimensions of corporate responsibility. In addition, the most important stakeholders are identified and the elements of firm-stakeholder relations analysed. Our findings suggest that in terms of the three dimensions of corporate responsibility the company provided more information than what the media presented to its audience. On the other hand, the newspaper articles consisted of much more information than the press releases regarding the stakeholder relationships.
