English Teachers’ Perspectives of Learner Autonomy in Online Reading Comprehension in Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aimed to describe the forms and functions of speech acts used by teachers and students in learning English in class VII-A of State Junior High School 1 Medan, North Sumatra. The method used was a descriptive method using a qualitative approach. The data sources used were 2 English teachers and 30 students of State Junior High School 1 Medan. The technique used was the technique of recording, observing, and taking notes. Data analysis techniques consisted of (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) verification or concluding. The results of this study indicated that there were three forms and functions of teacher and student speech acts in learning. These speech acts included perlocutionary, locutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts. Locutionary speech acts included directive, assertive, and imperative. Illocutionary speech acts included assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. Perlocutionary speech acts included satire, understanding, submission, and convincing shape. The functions of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts were report, tell, inquire, inquire, order, beg, mention, sue, and praise.

This research aimed to find out the effectiveness of the use of social networking media Edmodo on class discussions on practical learning of English; and the relationship between the use of social networking media Edmodo and students’ participation in class discussions on practical learning of English. The sample of this research was 32 students of class XI in the 2022/2023 academic year of Kebangsaan senior high school Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This research was an experimental research type using a factorial design, where the test variable (x1) was the use of Edmodo social media, the control variable (x2) was without the use of Edmodo social media, the dependent variable (y1) consisted of students’ participation in class discussion in the first simulation on practical English teaching materials (y1), and the second simulation on practical English teaching materials (y2). The results of the MANOVA test proved that the effectiveness of using discussion forums using Edmodo to increase students' English learning participation. As a result, there were differences in students’ participation in class discussions in the first simulation on English practice teaching material (y1), and the second simulation on English practice teaching material (y2) with those who did not take part in discussions on the social networking media Edmodo (x2).

Need Analysis of Dyslexia Students in English Reading Comprehension Instructions

The challenges of learning English as a foreign language presented issue for dyslexia students who had deficiencies in reading comprehension involving information processing, concentration, and sensory motor skills. The aims of this research were to describe the dyslexia students’ needs in English reading comprehension. The sample consisted of 117 dyslexia students aged 13-16 years old from Karya Murni Special Needs School and Ananda Karsa Mandiri School, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were in the form of descriptive qualitative research which was taken from interview, questionnaire, and test. The results of this research proved the analysis of: (1) the physical, emotional, and social characteristics of dyslexia students, (2) the characteristics of dyslexia students’ learning style and testing reading comprehension test, (3) the need analysis for dyslexia students in teaching method in the classroom, (4) the need analysis of dyslexia students in reading comprehension, (5) the factors why dyslexia students had difficulty in English as a foreign language, and (6) the factors why dyslexia students had difficulty in English reading comprehension. With needs analysis, it was expected the identification of necessities, lacks, and wants could be formulated properly as a basis to prepare English reading teaching materials.
