“…The bone tissue repair process is a complex cascade of biological events controlled by numerous cytokines and growth factors that provide local signals to mediate migration of osteoprogenitor cells and subsequent differentiation, cell proliferation, revascularization and production of extracellular matrix [34]. Several growth factors, such as Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) [35][37] platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) [35][37], transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) [35], [36], insulin like growth factor (IGF) [36], [38], vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) [35][38], endothelial cell growth factor (ECGF) [36], fibroblast growth factor (FGF) [34], [36], [37] and epidermal growth factor (EGF) [34] are expressed during development and bone repair, and their local availability in the wound might collaborate for faster and successful bone healing [34].…”

“…Such bivalent systems are then able to support cells and also provide growth and differentiation factors . Studies using several types of NPs such as polymeric, liposomes, silica, and calcium phosphate ceramic NPs indicated that the use of nanoparticulate systems as carriers allow a sustained delivery of their cargo. Table summarizes the outcomes of NPs used as drug and gene carriers.…”

“…In the latter case, the liposomes allowed a controlled release of EGF that stimulated MSCs migration and osteoblast differentiation. While free exogenous EGF in PBS was cleared faster and did not lead to full wound regeneration, EGF entrapped in liposomes allowed faster recovery, with approximately 50% more bone trabeculae present after 21 days …”

“…Many studies have suggested that the local concentration of EGF needs to be sufficiently high and prolonged for effective wound healing [126,132,133]. Therefore, different drug delivery systems that are able to protect and stabilize the protein have been investigated, including hydrogels, sponges, polymeric pellets, nanofibers, microspheres, a biomimetic delivery system that incorporated EGF with biocompatible components such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, vitronectin or liposome, and more recently, a poloxamer gel formulation of recombinant low-molecular-weight protamine conjugated EGF (rLMWP-EGF) by conjugating a highly positively charged rLMWP to the N-terminal of EGF [134140]. The latter has shown better healing effects on burn injuries [139].…”
