Enhanced electro-mechanical performance of TiO<inf>2</inf> nano-particle modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as electroactive polymers

Abstract: This paper reports a polymer nano-composite with enhanced electro-mechanical performance by mixing TiO 2 nano-particles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The nano-composites with TiO 2 concentration up to 30 wt% were synthesized by in-situ polymerization. High energy ball milling and surfactant polyethylene glycol was used to reduce the agglomeration and ensure a stable dispersion. The properties of nano-composites, i.e. transmittance, elastic modulus, response time and dielectric constant, can be tuned… Show more

“…The vast majority of studies with nanoparticles were carried out to increase the hydrophobicity of PDMS [ 97 , 99 , 101 , 129 , 133 ], transforming the surfaces of coatings and sponges into super-hydrophobic surfaces, i.e., the angle of contact with water is greater than 150°. These are used for different applications such as self-cleaning surfaces, low infrared emissivity, and the adsorption (separation) of oil in water.…”

“…The drag force reduction rate decreased by 24%, and the coating showed greater durability in acidic and alkaline solutions [ 98 ]. TiO 2 additives are also applied to create electroactive material based on PDMS; this material shows reduced drive voltage and response speed in comparison with a traditional silicone-poly(hexylthiophene) electroactive polymer [ 99 ].…”

“…An upgraded electromechanical implementation of TiO 2 nanomolecule-altered PDMS as electroactive polymers is introduced in Ouyang et al 59 A multifunctional stage dependent on electroactive polymers and silica nanoparticles for tissue building applications is presented in Ribeiro et al 60 The effective dielectric thickness was reduced with the addition of an electroactive polymer. Based on the findings that the outputs do not increase proportionally, the changed material and secondary nanostructure on the surface tend to have a higher impact on efficiency than the increase in thickness.…”
