Enhanced gas permeability by fabricating mixed matrix membranes of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes and polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM)

Abstract: The derived MMM were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and single gas permeation tests. Gas permeation measurements showed that MMM incorporated with modified and non-modified CNTs exhibited different gas separation performance. The f-MWCNT MMM show better performance compared to MMM with non-modified CNTs in terms of dispersion and permeability at 2 wt% f-MWCNTs loading without sacrificing selectivity. According to diffusivity and solubility data derived fro… Show more

“…MMMs make use of the benefits of the transport properties of both inorganic and organic materials in the polymer matrix that provide higher strength, permselectivity and antifouling characteristics compared to bare polymeric membranes. Some examples are polymeric membranes modified with zeolite [19], zero-valent metals [20], carbon nanotubes [21], metal oxide nanoparticles [22], and fullerenes [23].…”

“…The crosslinked P84 MMMs containing cation exchange particles were prepared for adsorption of BSA and LZ [36]. Moreover many different inorganic particles such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) [37], carbon nanotubes [38], silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) [39], zinc oxide (ZnO) [40] and hydroxyapatite (HAP) [41] were dispersed in polymer matrix to prepare MMMs with microporous or macroporous structures.…”

“…Carbon nanotubes have opened a new era in the production of multifunctional polymer composites [13,[31][32][33] and are widely used in mix-matrix membranes (MMMs) for separating gas mixtures [34][35][36][37], as well as for emitting СО 2 from gas mixtures [30,38].…”
