Bioprocesses have been developed as relatively recent alternatives to conventional, non-biological technologies, for waste gas treatment and air pollution control in general. This paper reviews major biodegradation processes relevant in this field as well as both accepted and major innovative bioreactor configurations studied or used nowadays for the treatment of polluted air, i.e. biofilters, one-and two-liquid phase biotrickling filters, bioscrubbers, membrane bioreactors, rotating biodiscs and biodrums, one-and two-liquid phase suspended growth bioreactors, as well as hybrid reactor configurations. Some of these bioreactors are being used at full-scale for solving air pollution problems, while others are still at the research and development stage at laboratory-or pilot-scale.

Two-phase partitioning bioreactors (TPPBs) support the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated gaseous emissions at unprecedented rates and concentrations. TPPBs are biological multiphase systems provided with a non-aqueous phase (NAP) with high affinity for the target VOC. Although modeling of TPPBs is a research field that has rapidly evolved, recent experimental findings such as the direct VOC uptake from liquid NAPs and the quantification of simultaneous partial mass transfer coefficients have not been incorporated yet in a comprehensive mathematical description. In this work, a mathematical description of TPPBs, including continuous aqueous phase renewal and potential VOC uptake directly from the NAP, was developed. Model simulations indicated that TPPB performance can be enhanced by improving the partial mass transfer coefficient between the gas and the NAP (by increasing the contact between the gas and the NAP). The model also showed that microorganisms with half-saturation constants < 5 g m -3and ability to take up VOC directly from the NAP can boost significantly TPPB performance. The present modeling platform was tested against experimental data from literature for methane, hexane and dichloromethane and no parameter fitting was carried out.

A new solid support membrane aerated biofilm reactor was designed for the synthesis of enantiopure (S)-styrene oxide utilizing Pseudomonas sp. strain VLB120DeltaC growing in a biofilm as biocatalyst. In analogy to traditional packed bed systems, maximizing the volumetric oxygen mass transfer capability (k(L)a) was identified as the most critical issue enabling a consistent productivity, as this parameter was shown to directly influence biofilm growth and biotransformation performance. A microporous ceramic unit was identified as an ideal microenvironment for biofilm growth and for efficient oxygen transfer. A uniform and dense biofilm developed on this matrix. Due to this dual function, the reactor configuration could be significantly simplified by eliminating additional packing materials, as used in traditional packed bed reactors. Up to now, a maximum productivity of 28 g L(ab) (-1) day(-1) was achieved by integrating an in situ substrate feed and an in situ product recovery technique based on a silicone membrane. The system was stable for more than 30 days before it was actively terminated.
