Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of the Carbon Quantum Dot-Modified BiOI Microsphere

Abstract: Novel carbon quantum dot (CQD)-modified BiOI photocatalysts were prepared via a facile hydrothermal process. The CQD-modified BiOI materials were characterized by multiple techniques. The CQD with an average size around several nanometers was distributed on the surface of BiOI microsphere. Its photocatalytic activity was investigated sufficiently by the photodegradation of methylene orange (MO). The results showed that the CQD/BiOI 1.5 wt.% sample exhibited the optimum photocatalytic activity, which was 2.5 ti… Show more

“…While Chen et al used this approach, to predict the type of active chemical species responsible of photocatalytic activity of carbon quantum dots modified BiOI microsphere [78]. The small band gap of 1.8 eV makes BiOI easily to excite by visible light, however, the more positive edge of the BiOI conduction band (0.6 V vs. NHE) suppress the production of a superoxide radical.…”

“…The photocurrent is relatively stable, although some variation could be due to recombination of electron/hole pairs in the N-CQDs. 46 It is informative to compare the magnitude of the photocurrent under OCV control vs. under applied potential control. In the former case (the reader is again referred to Figure 5 for this discussion), illumination induces a very small, very brief photocurrent (on the order of several nA).…”

“…The instruments were similar to our previously work [13]. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were recorded by a Danton TD-3500 X-ray diffractometer (Cu-Ka radiation, λ = 1.54 Å).…”

“…As reported in our previously work [13], the photocatalytic activities were evaluated under visible light irradiation using a Xe lamp light source with a 420-nm UV cutoff filter. In a typical process, 100 mg of photocatalyst was dispersed in 100-ml methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) aqueous solution (50 mg L −1 ), respectively.…”
