Enhanced Serological and Virological Findings of Epstein-Barr Virus in Patients with AIDS and AIDS-Related Complex

Abstract: The potential involvement of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in AIDS was examined by determining the type of EBV-specific antibody responses and the EBV content or lymphoproliferative ability present in selected body fluids of patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex. The results were compared with two control groups. An enhanced antibody response to a broad spectrum of EBV antigens was found in patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex. The pattern of virus-specific antibody responses resembled that associated wi… Show more

“…Normal antibody responses to cytomegalovirus and EpsteinBarr virus have been recorded for kidney transplant patients treated with anti-thymocyte globulin (27). On the other hand, some investigators have documented derangements in immune response to Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus agents in immunosuppressed individuals (2,23,34,40,49,53).…”

“…ative subjects as homosexual men [Detels et al, 1984;Drew et al, 19851 and it has been suggested that they may serve as cofactors in HIV infection by increasing HIV viral replication and expression or by accelerating the disease process by modulation of the host immune system [Hirsch et al, 1984;Holmberg et al, 1988;Webster et al, 1989;Clouse et al, 1989;McKeating et al, 19901. Several investigators focused their studies on the interaction between herpesviruses and HIV in patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex (ARC) [Sumaya et al, 1986;Halbert et al, 1986;Quinn et al, 19871. Our aim was to study this interaction during the time period preceding the development of the severe immunodeficiency state. In order to evaluate the specific antibody responses directed to EBV and CMV and to provide serological evidence suggesting reactivation of these viruses able to initiate or accelerate the immunodeficiency, IgA and IgG titres to EBV and CMV were studied in the serum of HIV positive patients and these observations were related to the absolute numbers of CD4+ lymphocytes in the blood.…”

“…Virologic and serologic findings also suggest a role for EBV in AIDS; higher levels of EBV replication in cult to differentiate a typical EBV mononucleosis syndrome from the clinical category A for children with HIV infection, oropharyngeal secretions and serologic evidence of persistent or reactivated EBV infection seem more common in HIVas described in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classification system for HIV infection in children [9]. infected subjects [4].…”
