Enhancement of Glucose Toxicity by Hyperbaric Oxygen Exposure in Diabetic Rats

Abstract: The side effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment, such as oxidative stress and oxygen toxicity, have long been of interest. However, there are no comprehensive studies evaluating such toxic effects in diabetes mellitus (DM). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of HBO on glucose homeostasis and histological changes in pancreatic β -cells of experimentally induced diabetic rats. A total of 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: 1) Control group, no diabetic induction wit… Show more

“…In contrary to our findings, Matsunami et al. () reported increased blood glucose levels in a similar animal model of experimental type 1 diabetes, and they found a reduction in the insulin‐producing β ‐cells in diabetic rats receiving HBO therapy compared with a control group. These differences might be attributed to different levels of diabetes.…”

“…In animal experiments, HBO treatment prevented an increase in blood glucose level during growth and changed the muscle type to slow twitch subtype (13)(14)(15). On the other hand, HBO treatment significantly increased blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetic rats compared with the levels in non-diabetic controls (16). However, there has been no investigation of the effects of HBO on lipid metabolism except for decreased oxidized low-density lipoprotein (17).…”
