Research on didactic audiovisual translation (AVT) has delivered fruitful results in the last decade and is gaining increasing attention in academia. The term “didactic AVT” was coined by Talaván (2020) to refer to the active application of different AVT modes in the foreign language classroom. Although subtitling and dubbing are the two AVT modes that have traditionally received more attention, research on other less popular modes, such as audio description (AD), subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) or voice-over are gaining momentum. In this paper, the results of a pilot study for an AD didactic sequence for the B1 level will be presented. This pilot study has been carried out within the TRADILEX project, a R&D+i project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (2020-2023), which aims to perform quasi-experimental research to determine the degree of improvement in English as a foreign language (EFL) after the implementation of a methodological proposal that integrates different AVT modes. Using a mixed-method methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative data obtained from different data sources, the preliminary conclusions drawn bring to light that there are signs of improvement in the students’ production skills. This could confirm a possible relationship between the use of AD in the foreign language classroom.

Purpose This study aims to delve into the interplay between didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and computer-assisted language learning (CALL), exploring their combined impact on the development of intercultural competence (IC) among learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Design/methodology/approach Using a quasi-experimental approach with a quantitative research design, the study analyses the outcomes of a questionnaire answered by 147 students across 15 language centres in Spanish Universities. These participants actively engaged in completing the lesson plans of the Traducción audiovisual como recurso didáctico en el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras project, a Spanish-Government funded research initiative aimed at assessing the effects of DAT on language learning. Findings The current study confirms the reliability of the instrument developed to measure students’ perceived improvement. Beyond validating the research tool, the findings of the current study confirm the significant improvement in intercultural learning achieved through DAT, effectively enhancing students’ motivation to engage in language learning. Research limitations/implications The current research solely examines students enrolled in higher education language centres. This paper closes with a CALL for additional research, including participants from other educational stages, such as primary or secondary education. In the broader context of CALL research, this study serves as a valuable contribution by exploring the potential of DAT in fostering IC in EFL settings. Originality/value This research confirms the potential of DAT and CALL to promote students’ learning process, as the combination of these approaches not only yields linguistic benefits but also intercultural learning.

The didactic applications of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) to Foreign Language Learning refer to the use of AVT modes (subtitling, dubbing, etc.) as didactic resources. It is a line of enquiry that has been receiving increasing attention in recent years, from researchers and practitioners alike. The TRADILEX Project has aimed to reinforcing this area of study by designing and testing a methodological proposal where various AVT modes (subtitling, voice-over, dubbing, and the media accessibility modes of audio description and subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing people) have been applied to enhance integrated skills in English as a foreign language. This article will offer an account of the whole online piloting process undertaken within TRADILEX. It will show how the methodological design, the lesson plans, and the instruments were confirmed as functional, reliable, and effective for integrated skills enhancement, before undertaking the pre-experimental long-term study that lays at the core of the project.
