Enhancing the wearablity and accessibility of illuminated POF garment

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an illuminated polymeric optical fibre (POF) garment – the LUMI jacket – with accessibility and wearability improvements. This paper demonstrates how wearable technology can be seamlessly integrated into daily life. Design/methodology/approach An interdisciplinary approach involving design and technological techniques was adopted. Both garment design approaches and textile technologies were used to optimise the performance of a POF jacket. A group of tactile se… Show more

“…The system was made by capacitive sensor to achieve multi-touch sensing function on fabrics for colour changing effect 2 . Furthermore, an illuminated POF garment, the LUMI jacket, is developed to show the evidence on seamless integration of POF and touch-sensitive function into fashion wearables 32 . It is demonstrated that there is limited of exploration on POF textile integrated with number gesture recognition function for interactive applications both in wearables and interior 58 .…”

“…The durability and wash-ability of wearables are depended on material properties, as it preserves the performance of wearables after multiple cycles of washing (Koski et al , 2013). Bai et al (2019) conducted research on using polymeric optical fibre (POF) and proved that the smart jacket made of POF is possible to be home laundered by maintaining durability of wearables. Lastly, the sustainability features within wearables are addressed by socio-environmental perspectives, meaning how wearables impact on the environment and the quality of individuals' lives (Lee et al , 2016).…”

“…An interdisciplinary design method was suggested for interactive POF textile development (Tan et al , 2018). Some cases of the POF integrated into a textile fabric structure to provide illumination (Bai et al , 2019). Seamless felting technology connected side-glowing POFs and nonwoven fabric to achieve smart textile (Sergeyeva and Sergeyev, 2019).…”
