Abstract. Clinoptilolite zeolites were chemically modified with chitosan (Chit) and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) were synthesized for removal of mercury from liquid condensate hydrocarbon. The mercury content was in liquid hydrocarbon which was measured by Lumex mercury analyzer. The performance of sorbents based on zeolites modified chitosan and magnetic nanoparticles were examined on the real liquid condensate hydrocarbon. Removal of mercury using a prestine clinoptilolite zeolites, and zeolites modified chitosan (zeolites-Chit) were ~4.5, and ~35%, respectively. The effects of magnetic nanoparticles in zeolites-Chit sorbents were significant to reduce the mercury content in liquid condensate hydrocarbon which were from ~63 to ~66%. Increasing the mass ratio of Fe3O4 that influenced to the BET surface area of natural zeolites. Zeolites-Chit-Fe3O4NPs as an efficient sorbents are potential ideal to remove mercury in hydrocarbon for practical applications.

Removal of Hydrogen Sulfide from Biogas Using a Red Rock

The potential of red rock (RR) materials for the removal of H2S from biogas was studied. The rock samples were collected, sieved, and organized in various particle size ranges such as 0.32-250 μm, 250-500 μm, 500-750 μm, 750 μm-1 mm, and 1-1.5 mm. These samples were calcinated at the various temperatures as 500°C, 750°C, and 1000°C and then characterized for phase composition by energy-dispersive X-ray florescent technique, surface morphology by Zeiss Ultra Plus Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), and surface area by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The calcinated RR was filled in the bed reactor, and biogas was allowed to pass through the adsorbent while recording the inlet and exit concentration of H2S. The results show that particle size, calcination temperature, adsorbent mass, and biogas flow rate were parameters that influenced the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of RR. The sample sieved at 0.32-250 μm and calcinated at a temperature of 1000°C showed 95% high removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of 0.37 g/100 g of the sorbent. Regeneration of spent materials when exposed to air, keep on by reuse in the column, appeared to have nearly similar removal efficiency as the original calcined sample. Thus, the overall performance of the material is promising, which is due to the presence of metals such as iron and magnesium, among others. Therefore, proving the successful elimination of contaminant, RR is an available material for biogas purification.

This study examined the effects of acid/base activation and chitosan coating on clinoptilolite zeolite as an adsorbent for biogas purification from palm oil mill effluent (POME) using simultaneous absorption-adsorption methods. The effects of chitosan concentration in the clinoptilolite zeolite/chitosan (ZAC) composites were studied to determine the best type of adsorbent for purifying biogas to obtain the highest methane (CH4) concentration: the biogas produced from POME via an anaerobic digestion process had a CH4 concentration of 87% and a carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration of 13%. In this study, the Ca(OH)2 solution was used for the absorption process, and the ZAC composite was used as the adsorbent in the adsorption process. To enhance the adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent when purifying biogas, clinoptilolite zeolite (ZA) was activated using strong acid (HCl) and base (NaOH) in various concentrations (ranging from 1-3 M), calcination at 450°C for 2 h, and coating with chitosan concentrations (ranging from 0.25-1 v/v%). The ZA was coated with chitosan to increase its adsorption efficiency, as chitosan contains high levels of amine and hydroxyl groups that interact with CO2 impurities and form carbamic acid, ultimately producing carbamate salt. The composition of biogas before and after treatment was analyzed using gas chromatography. Overall, the final content of the biogas after the purification process with absorption using the Ca(OH)2 solution and adsorption in a fixed-bed column using the ZAC2-0.5 composite was 0.42% CO2 and 99.58% CH4. The purified biogas had a very high methane gas content; thus, this study's findings suggest that purified biogas can be used as a clean energy source for wider industrial applications.
