“…Entheseal changes were found to positively correlate with structural properties of long bones in other studies (Ibáñez‐Gimeno et al, ; Mazza, ; Michopoulou, Nikita, & Henderson, ; Niinimäki & Baiges Sotos, ; Weiss, ) and there is a global trend to observe postcranial morphological differences between societies with different subsistence practices. Therefore, statistically significant differences in humeral and femoral structural properties between hunter‐gatherers and Guaraní individuals are expected to be found upon controlling for body size.…”

“…In the H‐G sample, sex determination was based, primarily, on morphological sexual differences in the greater sciatic notch (Buikstra & Ubelaker, ) and the pubic portion of the os coxae (Phenice, ) and, secondarily, on the scoring system for sexually dimorphic cranial features (Buikstra & Ubelaker, ). When the skull and os coxae were missing, a set of discriminant functions for long bones specifically generated for the H‐G societies of the study area were applied to estimate sex (Mazza, ; for reliability tests of this method, see Mazza, ). Unfortunately, no discriminant functions were suitable for the Guaraní sample and the lack of anatomical connections between elements prevented the estimation of sex from the os coxae or cranium; therefore, it was decided to run a mixture analysis (Dong, ).…”
