Entrepreneurship and embeddedness: dynamic, processual and multi-layered perspectives

Abstract: Contemporary research has demonstrated that entrepreneurship is a fundamentally contextualized phenomenon and unfolds differently in different contexts. Despite the extensive coverage of the importance of embeddedness for entrepreneurial activities, the research predominantly relies on somewhat static, single layered, and binary notions of embeddedness. We argue that there is a strong need for studies that problematize embeddedness and the relationship between entrepreneur and context. This call for papers, th… Show more

“…Bridging structural holes, arising from the limitations of a particular context, happens not only across social networks (Burt 2000(Burt , 2004, but also across spatial dimensions (Korsgaard, Ferguson, and Gaddefors 2015), and institutional contexts (Yang 2004). As such, movements and connections are observed across all dimensions (Anderson, Drakopoulou Dodd, and Jack 2012), depending on the type of structural hole, and opportunistic vision and needs of an entrepreneur, thus revealing a dynamic nature of embeddedness (Anderson and Ronteau 2017;Wigren-Kristofersen et al 2019) with which entrepreneurs engage and form relations (Gaddefors and Anderson 2019) to enable their activities, including access to resources.…”

“…Literature review and analytical framework 2.1 Theoretical framework According to institutional perspective, entrepreneurship as a process is embedded in sociocultural and institutional contexts and boundaries (Welter et al, 2019) in which the influence and actions of the players in the process cannot be analysed in isolation but instead considered together (Spedale and Watson, 2014). These contexts shape the entrepreneurial processes and outcomes and provide avenues for accessing vital resources, eccentric information and support, including enhancing the legitimacy of both the business and the entrepreneur (Vannebo and Grande, 2018;Wigren-Kristofersen et al, 2019). On the other hand, these contexts can lead to unwanted results or constraints when the relationship between actors is not adequately managed and leveraged (Wigren-Kristofersen et al, 2019).…”

“…These contexts shape the entrepreneurial processes and outcomes and provide avenues for accessing vital resources, eccentric information and support, including enhancing the legitimacy of both the business and the entrepreneur (Vannebo and Grande, 2018;Wigren-Kristofersen et al, 2019). On the other hand, these contexts can lead to unwanted results or constraints when the relationship between actors is not adequately managed and leveraged (Wigren-Kristofersen et al, 2019). Accordingly, because of the nexus between business and household, the two cannot be studied as distinct and isolated units, but instead as a system of interrelated relationships (Hirschi et al, 2019;Leung et al, 2020).…”

“…Our study is also based on the general premise that entrepreneurial processes (such as learning) enfold differently in different socio-spatial spaces (Wigren-Kristofersen et al, 2019). Consistent with Jack and Anderson (2002) and Simsek et al (2003), we view entrepreneurial ventures as embedded within a broader structure of relationships.…”
