Environmental and economic aspects of higher RES penetration into Macedonian power system

Abstract: The energy sector in Macedonia is the main emitter of greenhouses gases (GHG) with share of about 70% in the total annual emissions. Furthermore, within the energy sector, 70e75% of emissions are associated with the electricity generation due to the predominant role of the lignite fuelled power plants. This makes the electricity sector the most significant key source and, at the same time, the main target for CO 2 emissions reduction. Recently, the government has adopted a strategy for the use of RES which ide… Show more

“…It has already been used to recreate many different energy systems and devise numerous energy scenarios. For example, authors of [29] and [33] used the model to simulate different scenarios for the Macedonian energy system. In [32] and [34] EnergyPLAN has been used to model the Danish energy system and to analyze the potential for the integration of RES.…”

“…In general, it can be said that EnergyPLAN model is specialized for large scale integration of renewable energy sources in energy systems and resulting environmental and economic aspects of the integration. [26][27][28][29] The optimization of the most appropriate mix of photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines in the island system was done by using ENERGYPLAN. At first, it has been considered that all electricity is produced from wind turbines.…”

A similar solution in [12] PHS is proposed for achieving a high share of wind and solar electricity supply for Croatia, increasing wind penetration and reducing of CO 2 emissions in Macedonia [13] and also to reduce the wind curtailment in Europe as described in [14].…”
