Environmental conditions conducive to anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) spawning in the Adriatic Sea

Abstract: The goal of this paper is to investigate the relationship between environmental variables and the occurrence of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) spawning over a year, in order to enable the timing and strength of high spawning activity to be predicted. Biological sampling of anchovy was conducted on the fishing grounds of the eastern Adriatic (the northernmost semi‐enclosed basin in the Mediterranean) on a monthly basis from January 1999 to December 2010, while data on environmental parameters were taken from … Show more

“…Anchovy is an euryhaline species widely spread over the entire basin (Sinovcic, 1978;Palomera et al, 2007;Morello and Arneri, 2009;Zorica et al, 2013). The spawning period goes from April to October (Regner, 1996), with two peaks in May-June and August-September (Regner, 1972;Sinovcic and Zorica, 2006;Morello and Arneri, 2009;Zorica et al, 2013).…”

“…They are serial batch spawners: the spawning takes place in the warmer months, between April and October (Regner 1996), with peaks in MayJune and August-September (Sinovčić and Zorica 2006, Morello and Arneri 2009, Zorica et al 2013. Recent surveys performed in the Adriatic Sea within the Sardone Project found larvae as early as February and as late as November, indicating an extension of the spawning season in the last few years (SARDONE 2010).…”
