Environmental evaluation of waste treatment scenarios for the towns Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, Russia

Abstract: Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra in Siberia has recently started to play a major role in the Russian economy because key oil and gas extraction sites are located in this region. As a result, the extensions of infrastructure and higher incomes have been leading to an accelerated population growth and consequent increase in the generation of solid household waste. The current methods of waste disposal have now reached their limits, especially in the towns Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut. The key objectives of … Show more

“…This study further supports the claim that the diversion of waste from landfills benefits the environment, which is a finding similar to the results of other studies, e.g., Bohra et al [22], Kaazke et al [28], and Starostina et al [27]. Furthermore, this study indicates that systematic changes aimed at the implementation of MSW source separation (including their consequent recycling) and incineration have greater potential for the reduction of environmental impact compared to incremental improvements of existing MSW management systems through increased sorting of mixed waste and introduction of LFG collection.…”

“…Given the sparse use of LCA methodology in Russia in general, LCA studies on waste management systems are rather limited. Never-theless, a few LCAs have been published for other Russian cities [26][27][28][29] including a recent LCA study on Moscow [30].…”

“…Landfilling is the most common method in the world for hazardous waste disposal (Dung et al, 2014;Kaazke et al, 2013;Klein et al, 2001). The main purpose of a landfill recovery programme is to reach determined public health standards, but aesthetic and landscape features are also important (Simmons, 2008;Tarrant et al, 2012) when the landfill has to be restored after final sealing.…”
