Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment Research in the Uk

Abstract: In this paper we briefly review the state of academic research in the UK in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). Through consideration of the number of articles related to EIA and SEA published in academic journals and the contribution of post-graduate students' (PhD and master level) dissertation theses we aim to understand where activity has occurred in the field over recent decades. Simple literature and database searches reveal that the UK is an a… Show more

“…Whilst SEA has to date received increased attention in its theory and practice (see Bina et al 2011;Fischer & Onyango 2012;Pope et al 2013;caschili et al 2014;Lobos & Partidario 2014), the oft-repeated definitional claim that SEA is a systematic process (cEc 2003;OdPM 2005) remains relatively unresearched. This is exacerbated by observations that theory in SEA is ahead of practice (Kagston & Richardson 2015), highlighting a mismatch between assumptions and reality in SEA (Axelsson et al 2012;Lobos & Partidario 2014).…”

“…In this paper, sensitivity analysis was purposively applied to the England SEA process of which significant literature has been published (curran et al 1998;Smith & Sheate 2001;Short et al 2004;Therivel & Walsh 2006;Smith et al 2010;Fischer et al 2015). It studies how a model output varies with its inputs, revealing the interactions and behavioural roles of elements within the process (Bahremand & de Smedt 2008).…”

“…13 EA is incorporated in teaching Physics, including Care, Protection, and Conservation Component indicators. 1 Based on environmental care, 17,18 EA assumes conscious thought in managing the environment is a factor in protecting and maintaining the environment. 19,6,20 This does not only demonstrate the understanding of the natural environment but also the attitude, value, and, skills required to address environmental issues.…”
