Environmental impacts of enlarging the market share of electric vehicles

Abstract: We extend a multimodal transport model to simulate an increase of the market share of electric vehicles. The model, which is described in detail in Kilani et al. (Sustainability 14(3):1535, 2022), covers the north of France and includes both urban and intercity trips. It is a multi-agents simulation based on the MATsim framework and calibrated on observed traffic flows. We find that the emissions of pollutant gases decrease in comparable proportion to the market share of the electric vehicles. When only users … Show more

“…They also pointed out that women tend to use SAEVs for shorter trips in regard to gender. As for the environmental effects of this new travel mode, reference [30] extends a multimodal transport model to simulate an increase in the market share of EVs to reveal their impacts from the environmental perspective. Their work based on MATSim pointed out that even the reduction in emissions could be limited if only short trips were served by EV.…”

“…For example, recently, the European Union (EU) forbade the production of new internal-combustion vehicles after 2035 (except by the luxury-car industry). Those regulations play an important role in supporting and accelerating the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system, especially for individually-owned vehicles [4][5][6].…”

“…Moreover, charging stations, once rare, are now emerging everywhere. Indeed, the widespread adoption of EVs will be possible only if implementation of the charging system keeps pace [6,12,13]. Everyone is conscious that charging infrastructure is the main barrier to EV use for consumers, and every state is trying to accelerate the expansion of charging structure with initiative and directives, whether for particular areas or on a large scale in areas like parking lots, malls, and fuel and service stations.…”
