Environmental lead exposure and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults

Abstract: Independent of recent lead dose, retained cumulative dose resulting from previous environmental exposures may have persistent effects on cognitive function. A portion of age-related decrements in cognitive function in this population may be associated with earlier lead exposure.

“…As shown in Fig. 1A, a cohort of synchronized young adult animals were incubated in nematode growth medium (NGM) plates at 20 o C overnight in presence of food (the training, unconditioned stimuli), and then washed twice with M9 buffer and transferred to an unseeded plate (conditioned stimuli) at 20 o C. After training, animals (approximately 50 worms) were individually deposited on a 9-cm petri dish containing 9-mL NGM for different time intervals (18,36,48,60,72, and 84 h). A frozen acetic-containing vial was placed on the center of the plate, and the plate was incubated at 26 o C for 90 min in constant 60% humidity to create a radial temperature gradient from 17 o C to 25 o C. The percentage of animals performing IT behavior were determined by the removal tracks of animals left on the agar surface upon the plate.…”

“…Prenatal environment includes maternal use of medication, maternal infection and inflammations, and exposure to various substances such as alcohol and heavy smoking during pregnancy [11]. The contamination of water resources has important repercussions for the environment and human health [12,13]. There are many toxic substances in the water soluble fraction of crude oil (WSF), for example, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenol, and heterocyclic compound [14].…”

“…Though Pb concentration in air has a downward trend since Pb free fuel consumption is improving, still Pb pollution is a serious environmental risk factor for especially children and pregnant women [1,17]. Determination of Pb amount in blood and tissue is the most valid method in Pb toxicity analysis [12,18]. Decrease in blood Pb concentration (B-Pb) is observed with the start of Pb free fuel consumption [9,15,19].…”
