Environmental Mercury and Its Toxic Effects

Abstract: Mercury exists naturally and as a man-made contaminant. The release of processed mercury can lead to a progressive increase in the amount of atmospheric mercury, which enters the atmospheric-soil-water distribution cycles where it can remain in circulation for years. Mercury poisoning is the result of exposure to mercury or mercury compounds resulting in various toxic effects depend on its chemical form and route of exposure. The major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) is largely through eating c… Show more

“…Mercury is deposited in the natural ecosystem through natural processes and the human activities which have the highest impact on nature, as they can nearly triple the amount of mercury in the atmosphere (17). In living organisms it may cause an increase in the production of the reactive oxygen species, because it leads to the depletion from the cell of major thiol-containing antioxidants which result in a condition known as oxidative stress (8,20).…”

“…They have the opportunity to prey in different areas of Europe, Asia and Africa according to their migration, and at the same time to assimilate the mercury from food (5,11). In wildlife birds, most cases of mercury poisoning result in an emaciation syndrome and a variety of sub lethal effects that may act together to cause death (2,17).…”

“…Além dos efeitos supracitados, o mercúrio prejudica o sistema reprodutor de mamíferos. A exposição ao mercúrio reduziu os níveis de espermatozoides, bem como de hormônio folículo estimulante (FSH) e de testosterona 53,54 , prejudicando globalmente a função reprodutora masculina.…”

“…United States Government Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry ranked mercury in the third position as the most toxic elements or substances that continuously dumped into waterways and soil, spilled into the atmosphere, and contaminated the food and water [1]. Methyl mercury has a relatively long biological half-life in humans.…”
