Numerous environmental issues arise as a result of a linear economy strategy: reserves become scarce and end up in landfills and as greenhouse gases. Utilizing waste as a resource or shifting towards a circular economy are among the effective strategies for addressing these issues. To track this shift, appropriate measures that concentrate on sustainable development while taking practical contexts into consideration are required. In this paper, we utilize plastic wastes as a replacement for bitumen for reuse aiming at a circular economy. The use of plastic waste materials, i.e., plastic bottles (PET) and gas pipes (PE) in asphalt materials as a bitumen modifier was studied through series of experimental lab test methods. Marshall samples were prepared using a conventional Marshall method containing five different percentages (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) of plastic content by total weight of bitumen. Samples were tested after 1 and 30 days and the result shows that the stability of plastic-modified asphalt concrete was increased after 30 days, while still meeting standard criteria with plastic contents up to 20%. Moreover, the addition of waste plastic in road construction is a very effective strategy for reusing plastic waste, which also provides economic and social benefits for a sustainable approach to road pavements.

This research appraised the effects of recycling senilia senilis waste seashells as a full or partial substitution for natural coarse aggregate (granite) in eco-friendly concrete production. The design mix employed a 1:2:4 concrete mix ratio for M25 grade, a w/c ratio of 0.5, river sand as fine aggregate, ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as a binder, and varying proportions of crushed seashells and granite as coarse aggregates (0:100, 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, and 50:50). Laboratory tests revealed that workability requirements were only met with a 10%-40% seashell addition, workability decreased with increasing seashell percentages. The compressive strength increased with curing age but decreased with the additions of seashells. The seashell-modified mixes failed to reach the design target strength for M25 concrete. Nonetheless, the 10 and 20% seashell-modified mixes achieved the required strength for M20 concrete. Split tensile strength increased with curing age for all mixes, the seashell-modified mixes yielded slightly reduced tensile strength values compared to the unmodified mix at all curing stages. However, the 10%, 30%, and 40% seashell-modified batches attained recommended split tensile strength values on the 28th day. Furthermore, high correlations were observed between the datasets of the some of the measured parameters, and variations for Split tensile strength as a function of seashell percentage and compressive strength were developed discretely by fitting the experimental data to the numerical models. Relationships were also developed for compressive strength and workability as functions of seashell percentage. Eco-friendly building construction recycling waste seashells is encouraged as it offers positive economic and environmental prospects.

Waste engine oil bottom (WEOB) is a hazardous waste whose effect as an additive to CR+SBS modified asphalt is rarely studied. In this study, the CR+SBS asphalt binder was modified with WEOB in different concentrations (3, 6, and 9 wt%). The GC–MS and FTIR were performed to evaluate the chemical compositions of WEOB and WEOBCR+SBS asphalt. The results showed that the main constituents of WEOB were similar to the functional groups of asphalt, along with maleic anhydride (MAH). Pavement performance-related rheological tests such as RV, temperature sweep (TS), FS, MSCR, and BBR were carried out. Results show that WEOBCR+SBS-6 exhibited the best high- and low-temperature property, followed by CR+SBS-3 and CR+SBS-9. Fluorescence microscope (FM) test, bar thin layer chromatograph (BTLC) test, FTIR, and AFM tests were carried out to evaluate the micro-morphologies and modification mechanism. The analysis revealed increased trends in resin fraction as opposed to asphaltene fraction with the increase of WEOB content. FTIR analysis revealed that the amide groups in WEOBCR+SBS asphalt bonded to the free radicals of CR. Moreover, a modification mechanism was elaborated. WEOB strengthens the cross-linked structure of CR+SBS polymers, reacting with SBS to graft onto MAH-g-SBS, and the free radical of CR interacts with the amide group in WEOB to form a bond. In addition, the content of lightweight components and surface roughness of SBS specimens were in good correlation, which contributed to the rutting resistance and adhesion and self-healing performance.
