Enzyme‐immunoassay in the diagnosis of hepatitis with emphasis on the detection of “e” antigen (HBeAg)

Abstract: A brief survey of the application of enzyme-immunoassay (EIA) for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis A, and their corresponding antibodies is given. The preliminary results of a similar EIA for detection of hepatitis B-related "e" antigen (HBeAg) and its antibody (anti-HBe) are reported. This EIA is much more sensitive than immunodiffusion: at least 128 times for HBeAg and at least 512 times for anti-HBe. HBsAg and its antibody do not interfere with the test. Only a few sera strong… Show more

“…In 1973 Feinstone et al (6) described the demonstration of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and antibody to HAV (anti-HAV) by immune electron microscopy. Since then, different methods, such as complement fixation (18), immune adherence hemagglutination (15,16), solid-phase radioimmunoassay (SPRIA) (7,19), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (10, 12, 20), have been used to detect HAV and anti-HAV.…”

“…One of the unresolved problems in the manifestation of type-B hepatitis is the phenomenon of HBeAg. "he detection of HBeAg by very sensitive techniques, such as RIA and ELISA gives a clear insight into its manifestation during the clinical course of the illness [van der Waart et al, 1978;Niermeijer et al, 1979;Krugman et al, 1979;Neurath et al, 19791 . HBeAg is detectable in patients' sera in the early clinical phase of the acute type of hepatitis B infection and disappears before HBsAg becomes undetectable.…”
