Enzyme washing of indigo and sulphur dyed denim

Abstract: A wide ranging finish effects have been given to denim fabrics in industrial scale to make it more fashionable and functional. Among the numerous wet and dry treatments given, worn out looks of various kinds have received the maximum attention. In this context, herein, two denim fabrics, one dyed with vat indigo and the other with sulphur black were enzyme washed. The enzymes used were acid cellulase and neutral cellulase and the treatments were done at varying concentrations, time and mechanical agitation. Th… Show more

“…In the textile industry, enzyme technology is drawing attention as an alternative to the traditional chemical finishing due to its characteristics of being non-toxic and environment-friendly [5,6,7,8,9]. In the fields of fiber modification, bio-bleaching, dye discoloration and decomposition, industrial wastewater treatment, and laundry detergent decontamination, various enzymes such as lysozyme, laccase, cellulase, amylase, and peroxidase have been studied for their possible immobilization [10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17].…”

“…Technically denim is durable and strong cotton warp-faced textile material in which the weft thread passes under two or extra warp threads [1] [2]. This twill weave structure produces a diagonal design which differentiates it from cotton duck fabric [3] [4].…”

“…Stone Wash, Acid Wash, Rinse Wash, Enzyme Wash, and Bleach Wash are some of the most widely used wash types. 5,6 Among the washing methods, hypochlorite bleaching is a commonly used process in the industry, especially for denim washing, to achieve the desired color hue. With the aid of oxidizing or reducing chemicals, denim bleach may be used to decolorize indigo from denim.…”

“…Since environmentally sustainable processes use less oil, they are more cost-effective. [15][16][17][18] This research work aims to investigate the bleach wash effect of denim fabrics before and after wash treatment. After bleach washes the color fastness to wash properties has been observed.…”
