“…Our kinetic study using the Lineweaver–Burk plot revealed that coptisine administration resulted in mixed-type inhibition of HPU, which agreed with previous studies of coptisine-induced inhibition patterns in bacterial collagenase from Clostridium histolyticum and in porcine pancreatic elastase 57 , 62 . In contrast, coptisine non-competitively inhibited JBU, which was also the case in our earlier reports on Rhizoma Coptidis extract and the alkaloids epiberberine and palmatine 29 , 32 , 33 . These kinetic mechanism differences might arise from structural differences between HPU and JBU.…”

“…The in vitro assay indicated that coptisine inhibited both HPU and JBU in a dose-dependent manner. We previously found that epiberberine and palmatine inhibited urease activity in vitro more effectively than coptisine 32 , 33 . However, H. pylori both contains internal (intracellular) and secretes external (extracellular) ureases, and internal urease in particular is vital for acid neutralisation and H. pylori growth in acidic environments 63 .…”

“…This alkaloid could be used in the treatment of diseases associated with ureolytic bacteria and could be further developed into a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of urease-related diseases. 239 Meanwhile, berberine (161) and palmatine 166 Photodynamic therapy was discovered at the beginning of the last century and mostly used as a cancer therapy; however, it has emerged as a promising treatment alternative against infectious diseases. The oxoaporphine alkaloid isomoschatoline (129) had an absorption profile with bands at 600-700 nm, was positive for singlet oxygen production and exhibited photodynamic antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and some Candida ssp.…”

“…[ 35 ] In addition, berberine could act as a urease inhibitors, which impairs the colonizing and virulent factor of H pylori . [ 36 ] The present study indicated berberine could substitute for bismuth in quadruple therapy with satisfactory eradication rates for treatment-naive patients. Accumulated evidence demonstrated that berberine can effectively inhibit and kill H pylori in vitro, even in multidrug resistant strains.…”
