Abstract. In the Guianan ecoregion complex, at least seven Leishmania species belonging to both the L. (Leishmania) Saf' janova, 1982 and L. (Viannia) Lainson and Shaw, 1987 sub-genera are causative agents of American visceral leishmaniasis, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, and cutaneous leishmaniases, including localized and diffuse forms. They are mostly sylvatic species subjugated to their own specific Lutzomyia sand fly vectors and to particular wild mammalian reservoir hosts of the dense rain forest. Originally implicated strictly in wild zoonoses and developing in forested ecotopes, Leishmania show a particular adaptive plasticity to face environmental modifications following deforestation and anthropization. This review presents the different pathogenic complexes of these parasites, emphasizes their implication in human diseases, and considers the influence of humans on their ecology.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis is endemic to the Espírito SantoNorthern Espírito Santo was covered by Atlantic Forest until the mid-20 th century, and American tegumentary leishmaniasis does not appear to have constituted a serious public health problem for the original settlers. Furthermore, there are no records of cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis resulting from old infections with Leishmania braziliensis in the region.Beginning in the 1980s, the suspension of insecticide use for malaria control may have favored invasion of houses by sand flies and coincided with the appearance of the first American tegumentary leishmaniasis cases in northern Espírito Santo. The study area was selected in order to obtain information to help elucidate the American tegumentary leishmaniasis epidemiological profile in the region, where human cases have been observed for about 20 years. -This paper describes sand flies similar to Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) with variations in the number of spines at the gonostyle and tests the hypothesis whether these specimens belong or not to N. intermedia species. Using Principal Component Analysis and Neighbour Joining, the measurements of 15 structures of the phlebotomine with variations in number of spines were compared with measurements of 30 sand flies of N. intermedia species. Both analyses didn't cluster the specimens with variation in spines number in one group and provided evidence to the hypothesis that those sand flies belong to N. intermedia.
