Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of chronic venous disease in Romania

Abstract: Chronic venous disorder (CVD) is a complex disease, that affects millions of people worldwide, and due to the fact that in its early stages is often overlooked by healthcare providers and ignored by the patient, the assessment of incidence and prevalence of CVD is difficult to be made. The aim of this project was to assess the CVD prevalence, risk factors and clinical characteristics in the adult population in Romania. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Romania from June 2015 to July 2015, including 1… Show more

“…When assessed as a fully symptomatic disease, it may affect approximately 60–65% individuals in the adult population [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, if the early stage is also included, it may affect even 83% of the adult population [ 4 , 5 ]. The etiopathogenesis of chronic venous disease (CVD) is highly complex.…”

“…According to data from large-scale international survey, the Vein Consult Program, the presence of any symptoms and signs of CVD, including its early stages, was reported in 83% of adult population [ 3 ]. Although slightly varying in some details, including study design and the size of analyzed population, similar data were gathered from several cross-sectional population-based national surveys, including Edinburgh Vein Study, Bonn Vein Study, or the large multicenter study performed in a Polish population by the Jawien group [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Due to the chronic character of disease, its burdensome influence on patient’s life comfort, with swelling or venous eczema, high risk of thromboembolic complications or venous leg ulceration at most advanced stages, CVD at any stage should no longer be considered as a “cosmetic problem” only [ 2 ].…”
