Epidemiology and demographics of juvenile idiopathic arthritis in Africa and Middle East

Abstract: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a group of chronic heterogenous disorders that manifests as joint inflammation in patients aged <16 years. Globally, approximately 3 million children and young adults are suffering from JIA with prevalence rates consistently higher in girls. The region of Africa and Middle East constitute a diverse group of ethnicities, socioeconomic conditions, and climates which influence the prevalence of JIA. There are only a few studies published on epidemiology of JIA in the regi… Show more

“…The latest review of epidemiological literature of JIA in the Middle Eastern region by Al-Mayouf et al highlights that there is not enough literature describing JIA in this region. Only 8 journal publications were identified concerning epidemiology and 42 articles describing JIA subtypes from Africa and Middle East [ 19 , 20 ]. The literature from Asia, especially India and Taiwan; the commonest subtype is enthesitis related arthritis.…”

“…Thus, future multi‐center studies based on random samples are suggested. In addition, in line with epidemiological studies which found that the most JIA patients are diagnosed with Oligoarticular subtype (Al‐Mayouf, Al Mutairi, Bouayed et al ., 2021 ; Consolaro, Giancane, Alongi et al ., 2019 ), most patients (52.77%) in this study were also diagnosed with this subtype. However, the number of patients diagnosed with other JIA subtypes was insufficient to compare them in regard to their psychological tendencies.…”

“… Notes : anti‐TNF alpha = anti‐tumor necrosis factor‐alpha; JIA = juvenile idiopathic arthritis; NSAID, non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug. a Most patients in this study are diagnosed with oligoarticular JIA subtype which agrees with previous epidemiological studies that showed this subtype of JIA to be the most prevalent one in the Middle East (Al‐Mayouf et al ., 2021 ), and the worldwide (Consolaro et al ., 2019 ). b The treatment type refers to the medical treatment the patients received during the study.…”

“…Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases of childhood [1][2][3]. Information on its prevalence in the world may vary slightly, depending on the region of residence [4][5][6]. The results of recent studies indicate that in Ukraine the incidence of JIA in children aged 0 to 17 years is…”
