Epidemiology and history of human parasitic diseases in Romania

Abstract: Intestinal parasitic diseases such as enterobiasis, giardiasis, and ascariasis are detected most frequently in Romania, but their importance is definitely surpassed by trichinellosis, cystic echinococcosis, and toxoplasmosis. Malaria was common until its eradication in 1963, and only imported cases are reported nowadays. The aim of this review was to bring together essential data on the epidemiology and history of human parasitoses in Romania. Information on 43 parasitic diseases was collected from numerous so… Show more

“…Despite the recent detection of vector-competent phlebotomine sandfly species in Hungary, screening of indigenous dogs and wild canids gave up to date no evidence for Leishmania infections (Farkas et al 2011). Vector-competent Plebotomus perfiliewi have been identified in southern Romania but there are no current reports on authochthonous canine or human leishmaniosis available (Danesco 2008;Neghina et al 2011). Although treatment does not eliminate Leishmania spp.…”

“…Albendazole (ABZ), a derivative of benzimidazoles, and its sulfoxide derivative, albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSX), are the most preferred drugs in the treatment of various parasitic diseases. These drugs are used as prophylaxis prior to surgery and cover a broad anthelmintic spectrum in inoperable cases because of their potent antiparasitic activities and relatively less side effects 1. Nevertheless, hydrophobicity is an important physicochemical parameter for the formulation of highly potent benzimidazoles.…”

“…In Romania, a country found over time to be highly endemic for trichinellosis, the first human case was detected in 1868 (in a cadaver autopsy), and a small epidemic developed in 1874 in Jassy (situated in the region of Moldova) when six members of a Polish-German family consumed tainted pork sausages. Unfortunately, three of them died, causing panic in the population, especially when the larvae were observed under microscopy (Neghina et al 2011(Neghina et al , 2010. Other significant cases/epidemics occurred in Denmark , the Crépy-en-Valois region of France (1878), Spain (1900), and Czechoslovakia (1902-1903 (Blancou 2001).…”
