“…With respect to study populations, it is essential that in studies involving a mixture of ID and non-ID patients, separate prevalence estimates are made, given the sizeable disparity in ASD prevalence estimates between this groups in community-based prevalence studies [7, 8, 4, 3]. As a result, the meaningfulness of prevalence estimate for a mixed ID/non-ID study populations is limited, unless separate data for both groups is also reported.…”

“…Community-based prevalence rates for autism in the general population show considerable variation across studies, though recent systematic reviews and large-scale epidemiological research estimate rates of between 0.7-1.1% [7, 8]. Additionally, the prevalence of autism is significantly higher in people with moderate to profound intellectual disability (ID); Brugha et al [8] found a prevalence of 39.3% (95% confidence interval 31.0-48.4) for this patient group, compared to 1.0% (95% confidence interval 0.4-2.2) for those with mild ID.…”

“…In Great Britain, the prevalence of ASDs Open Journal of Psychiatry in childhood is approximately 1% of the population [8], whereas in adulthood the prevalence increases to 1.1% [9]. In the United States, a recent research pointed out a prevalence of 2.41% [10].…”

“…Although there is also a change in the concept, there is a possibility that the prevalence of ASD in Japan is increasing. The prevalence of ASD in adults was first reported in the U.K in 2007 as approximately 1% of the population [4,8] though it is believed that many potential ASD patients remain undiagnosed and the comorbidities (secondary disorders) remain untreated. The prevalence of adult ASD in Japan has not been reported yet.…”
