Epidemiology of dust-mite-related disease

Abstract: For many years it has been suggested that allergens derived from the house dust mite played a major role in the pathogenesis of asthma, eczema and some cases of allergic rhinitis. Recently, house dust mite allergens have been purified and specific immunoassays developed with which exposure to house dust mites and their allergens can be more easily determined. Using these tools, epidemiological studies have provided confirmatory evidence that not only is house dust mite exposure associated with the majority of … Show more

“…In the 1980s, the theory that exposure to house dust mites and other allergens was an important worldwide cause of the disease was espoused by many scientists and experts (2,3). This theory was based on strong evidence suggesting that, in regions where indoor exposure to one of the main house dust mite allergens (Der p I) was high, more children were sensitized to house dust mites, and these children had significantly more airway hyperresponsiveness and recent wheeze (4).…”

“…HDM was shown to be associated with development of asthma [13,14]. However, outdoor allergens such as pollen can be an important trigger of asthma [15].…”

“…Sensitivity to house dust was confirmed in the 1920s by studies showing positive skin prick tests to house dust in many asthmatic individuals [1]. Such studies sparked scientific interest into what specific component of house dust was responsible for the sensitisation but it was not until the 1960s that Voorhorst and colleagues discovered Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus to be the major producer of house dust allergen [2, 3].…”
