Epidemiology of Newcastle disease in Africa with emphasis on Côte d'Ivoire: A review

Abstract: For decades, Newcastle disease (ND) has long been recognized as a frontline viral disease that constrains poultry production throughout Africa. The need to update on the epidemiology of the disease is rife, due to the increasing importance of poultry farming. In addition, poultry farming serves as the top animal food source globally. However, in Africa, the greater population of poultry is reared under traditional and conventional husbandry methods. This hugely impedes the ability of management practices to be… Show more

“…Poultry is quite vulnerable to the ND virus (NDV), and many outbreaks have been documented in poultry populations worldwide. These outbreaks lead to significant financial losses, amounting to millions of dollars annually [10]. NDV strains have been categorized into 3 pathotypes based on the noticeable symptoms in chickens: lentogenic, mesogenic, and velogenic.…”

“…In Africa, the greater population of poultry is reared under traditional management practices (Amoia et al,2021). Several factors, such as weekly farm cleaning or never practicing (Chaka et al, 2013), age diversity production system (Jaganathan et al, 2015), Inadequate biosecurity and vaccination efforts (Messai and Salhi, 2019), access to visitors (Alsahami et al, 2018), contact with wild birds (Otim et al, 2007), are contributory factors on the occurrence of this disease.…”
