“…Bone mineral density (BMD) has been measured with good precision for the purpose of identifying asymptomatic individuals at risk for fracture but factors such as ethnic variability and environmental diversity preclude the use of a single reference data base (1). Bone measurements may vary among people of different racial background living in specific geographic areas with differences in climate, exposure to sunlight and dietary habits (2)(3)(4)(5)(6). A contribution by the genetic potential to variability in bone mass may be observed comparing measurements in people of African origin and Caucasians.…”

“…When they corrected for skeletal area, the Asians had similar BMD at the lumbar spine, but the femoral neck difference persisted. Average BMD values of the lumbar spine in Japanese 23 and Korean 24 females are lower in the over 60 age group compared to American women. In Taiwan, lumbar spine BMD have similar values to European or American White populations, but hip BMD have lower values 25 .…”

“…Most inhabitants of Taiwan are descendants of southern Chinese and show similar BMD values in the spine but a BMD of 10-15% less in the hip compared with Caucasian populations, according to Tsai and Tai [27]. Epidemiology in Korea was presented by Rowe et al [28], who showed that spinal BMD values in a Korean population were similar to those found in France and Japan but lower than those in the USA and Sweden. Nevertheless, the fragility fracture rates were rather low in Korea.…”
