Epidemiology of psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis: a nationwide study using the Japanese national claims database

Abstract: ObjectiveThe primary objective was to estimate the national prevalence of psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) in Japan. Secondary objectives were to determine (1) whether psoriasis and PPP disease activity varies by season, and (2) whether disease severity is associated with concurrent diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension.SettingsPatients with a psoriasis or PPP diagnosis code between April 2010 and March 2011 were identified using a Japanese national database.Participants565 903 patient… Show more

“…Interestingly, psoriasis has a very low frequency in Asia, whereas AD presents a much higher frequency (approximately 0.5% vs 7% to 10% of adults). [19][20][21]73 In terms of molecular immunology, the T H 17 axis appears to be ''missing'' in Asia as we currently classify these polar diseases. Our report classifies Asian AD as a mixed phenotype between AD and psoriasis, harboring an intermediate cytokine profile of both diseases.…”

“…Interestingly, ~3% of melanoma patients treated in Japan with nivolumab developed a psoriasiform dermatitis (PsD) (4). Given that the estimated prevalence of psoriasis in general Japanese populations is only 0.3% (5), treatment with a PD-1 antagonist resulted in a dramatic increase of a psoriasis-like skin eruption in Japanese patients.…”
