Epidemiology of Restless Legs Symptoms in Adults

Abstract: Background: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder characterized by sleep-disrupting unpleasant leg sensations, often accompanied by daytime behavioral problems. Treatment for this condition is available, but it is suspected that most instances of RLS remain undiagnosed. The goal of this investigation was to assess the prevalence and health status correlates of restless legs symptoms (hereinafter referred to as restless legs) in the general population.

“…Previous population-based studies found an increasing prevalence of RLS with age 11 , and controversial results about gender 11,13 . Unlike primary RLS, it seems that age and gender are not important factors for the development of RLS in CRF subjects.…”

“…Data in population-based studies 11,13 about correlation between RLS and smoking was controversial. Many of our patients might have felt ashamed or frightened when asked about smoking habits, so we cannot attest the reliability of our results.…”

“…Lifestyle factors such as lack of physical activity, obesity, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, and consumption of coffee have also been postulated to have an effect on the risk or severity of RLS. 13 However, the evidence linking these factors to RLS is based on small studies (n = 41), 16 and the use of different methodologic and diagnostic criteria, and the lack of control for covariates, has resulted in conflicting results. We thus prospectively examined the associations between lifestyle factors (i.e., obesity, physical activity, overall diet quality, smoking, and alcohol intake) and risk of developing RLS in two large US cohorts including more than 65,000 men and women.…”

“…other studies have reported prevalence from 2.5 to 15% and it is highly variable depending on the age and design addressed [17][18][19] . Rothdach et al conducted a study using the same diagnostic criteria and showed a prevalence similar to the one found in our sample, 9.8% 4 .…”
