Epidemiology of the Rheumatic Diseases in Mexico. A Study of 5 Regions Based on the COPCORD Methodology

Abstract: The prevalence of MSK pain in our study was 25.5%. Geographic variations in the prevalence of MSK pain and specific diagnoses suggested a role for geographic factors in the prevalence of rheumatic diseases.

“…It is noteworthy that the study population was very representative of the Brazilian population according to the IBGE census of 2010. Epidemiological studies describing the frequency, distribution, and determining factors of diseases are an important initial strategy to design policies regarding disease prevention and management [12]. The use of the CQ has proved to be a useful tool for detecting cases of rheumatic diseases with the possibility to designate those patients as soon as possible to a rheumatologist or set priorities in the primary care setting [13,14].…”

“…This is a secondary analysis of the database of a previously published study on the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) symptoms and rheumatic conditions, including OA, carried out in the Mexican population [9]. Briefly, the study was cross-sectional and included communities from the states of Nuevo Leon, Sinaloa, Yucatan, and Mexico City.…”

“…A more detailed analysis of the data showed wide geographic variations, ranging from 2.5 to 16.3 %, which were not easily explained by methodological and individual characteristics. Nonetheless, because we carried out our study in geographical regions with uneven socioeconomic indicators [9], we hypothesized that social inequity could play a role in the prevalence of OA in each of the geographic areas studied. The approach of these geographic variations was based on a multilevel contextual design, which is able to detect social inequalities in health.…”

“…1 En México se ha reportado una prevalencia de 0.06% para esta enfermedad; la incidencia se ha estimado entre 1.8 y 7.6 casos por cada 100,000. 2 La supervivencia a los 5 años postdiagnóstico ha mejorado de forma progresiva, probablemente debido a una mejor comprensión de la enfermedad, a la aparición de nuevas terapias inmunosupresoras y de mejores tratamientos para el control de los daños.…”
