Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus and Bluetongue Virus Seroprevalence in Wild White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Florida, USA

Abstract: A wild population of white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus) was surveyed for evidence of past or current epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) and current bluetongue virus (BTV) infections. We collected 121 blood samples from hunter-harvested or live-captured deer from two state-managed properties in NW Florida; live captures were in support of a movement ecology study. Blood samples were tested for antibodies against titers to three EHDV serotypes (EHDV-1, EHDV-2, and EHDV-6), and multiplex quantita… Show more

“…Importantly, however, this does not mean that segments 2 and 6 of the Tunisian strain have an Australian origin as geographic sampling of these viruses is so limited, with only a few available sequences available for most years. Indeed, it is striking that the most recent sequences deposited on NCBI prior to 2021 are isolates from Florida from 2019, sampled during an outbreak in whitetail deer [35]. In addition, only one other sequence was available from Tunisia, serotype 6 from 2006, and only four sequences were available from other African countries.…”

“…In Florida, multiple orbiviruses have been isolated from diseased WTD on farms including Big Cypress orbivirus, bluetongue virus (BTV), CHeRI orbiviruses 1–3, epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) serotypes 1, 2, and 6, mobuck orbivirus, and Yunnan orbivirus [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. EHDV is widely distributed among farmed WTD in Florida.…”
