EPS adsorption to goethite: Molecular level adsorption mechanisms using 2D correlation spectroscopy

Abstract: (P. Cai) with increasing concentration of electrolyte. The integrated results from ATR-FTIR and 2D-CoS allow us to construct a comprehensive overview of EPS-goethite interaction processes at the molecular level, which can be used to improve our understanding of EPS-mineral interactions in the natural environment. These results also provide fundamental information for a better understanding of bacterial biofilm formation on soil and sediment minerals, and facilitate research on the subsequent interaction of nut… Show more

“…When Φ (ν1, ν2) and Ψ (ν1, ν2) having the same signs, the intensity change of band ν1 occurs predominantly before that of band ν2; when they having the opposite signs, the change order is reverse. The changes of band ν1 and band ν2 occur simultaneously when Ψ (ν1, ν2) equals to zero (56)(57)(58).…”

“…The 2D correlation analysis of attached bacteria was performed by using 2D-Shige (Shigeaki Morita, Japan) (27,55,56). In this analysis, contact time was used as the external perturbation for the interaction of OMCs with goethite.…”

“…The active groups such as ether bond, carbonyl, primary amino and hydroxyl in mineral surface may be the main functional groups of EPS secreted by bacteria (Cai et al . 2018), and play an important role in the process of bacterial attachment (Liu et al . 2005; Jia et al .…”

“…In support of this assertion, there are significant positive correlations between clay contents, total Fe and 14 C‐SOC in the paddy soils (Table 2), which is in line with the growing evidence for the role of abiotic mechanisms, involving mineral sequestration of SOC, in controlling SOC persistence in (Totsche et al ., 2018; Hemingway et al ., 2019), with clay and iron oxides as the main minerals involved (Schweizer et al ., 2019; Wan et al ., 2019). Soil microbes are also known to excrete extracellular polymeric substance (Cai et al ., 2019), which play an important role in binding to soil minerals and thus creating stable soil aggregates (Cai et al ., 2018; Lin et al ., 2018) that help stabilize organic carbon in soil (Totsche et al ., 2018). In our data, 14 C‐SOC was distributed in different sizes of soil aggregate (Fig.…”
