Social contacts and social support represent resources that contribute to resilience. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated measures, including contact restrictions, posed challenges for young adults’ social networks, in particular for their friendships. Employing a mixed-method approach, we investigated the pandemic’s effects on friendships and their role in successfully navigating the crisis. We combined a qualitative approach based on narratives and in-depth interviews and a quantitative approach based on online surveys focusing on university students in Austria. Longitudinal data collections allowed investigating changes and developments as the pandemic progressed. Results indicate profound challenges for participants’ friendships and difficulties in both building new and maintaining existing friendships. This also impaired the provision of social support by friends, scattering participants’ social resources and diminishing their resilience rather than strengthening it. Altogether, the results of this longitudinal study suggest a lasting negative effect of the pandemic on friendships for students.

The functioning of students in e-school and the well-being of children and adolescents associated with an epidemic cannot be reduced to the results of home learning alone, as highlighted by the students participating in such studies (Andresen et al, 2020). The aim of the study was to identify the areas most sensitive to the well-being of students in the e-school environment. The researchers’ interest in the field of education most often relates to students’ school achievements. It seems reasonable to look at the reality of school from the perspective of the well-being of adolescents. The threat of a pandemic and the transition to remote learning have created unique conditions for understanding student problems. In reference to Allardt’s concept, four categories of well-being were distinguished 1) school conditions, 2) interpersonal relationships, 3) means of self-fulfillment, and 4) overall health condition.The study was conducted online, but through schools, among grades 7 and 8, and the first grade of secondary school students (N = 360). The principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the tool have been developed. The criterion validity was determined on the basis of the relationship between the questionnaire and other tests that measure similar problems. Rosenberg’s Self-Assessment Scale and the KIDSCREEN-10 Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children were used.The Student’s Well-being in the E-school Environment: A Questionnaire is sufficiently reliable and valid. The distribution of low, average and high results in the sub-scales was more or less even. Low scores in the first sub-scale were reported by every fourth student, in the second and third sub-scale by every third student. The scale can be used to recognise the well-being of students learning in a remote or hybrid system. Well-being translates into functioning in many areas of life activity.

ZusammenfassungDieser Beitrag der Zeitschrift Gruppe. Interaktion. Organisation. (GIO) thematisiert die Erfahrungen, die Jugendliche in Deutschland während der Corona-Pandemie gemacht haben, aus einer Zeit-bezogenen Perspektive. Dazu wird ein Verständnis von Zeit angelegt, mit welchem Biografien als gesellschaftlich geordnete Strukturmuster verstanden werden. Im ersten Teil werden jugendtheoretische Überlegungen aus der Entwicklungspsychologie, Erziehungswissenschaft und Soziologie mit Blick auf Charakteristika präsentiert, welche Jugend als Zeit besonderer Veränderungen und Entwicklungsaufgaben kennzeichnen. Dabei stehen somatische Veränderungen, der Bedeutungszuwachs von Peer-Beziehungen und Gruppenerfahrungen sowie die Konzeptionalisierung von Jugend als gesellschaftlich vorstrukturierte ‚Bildungszeit‘ im Fokus. Diese Ausführungen stellen den Rahmen für den zweiten Teil des Artikels dar. In diesem werden Ergebnisse aus den „JuCo“-Studien I und II, die vom Forschungsverbund „Kindheit – Jugend – Familie in der Corona-Zeit“ der Universitäten Hildesheim und Frankfurt a. M. durchgeführt wurden, präsentiert. Es wird mit Kommentaren gearbeitet, welche Befragte am Ende eines Online-Fragebogens freiwillig hinterlassen haben. Die Berichte der Jugendlichen weisen auf Erfahrungen von Frustration über verpasste Chancen, Leistungsdruck und Zukunftsängste unter den jungen Menschen hin. Die Implikationen dieser Befunde werden abschließend mit Blick auf Bedarfe für die Gestaltung der Zeit nach der Pandemie diskutiert. Der Beitrag schließt mit einer Forderung nach offenen sozialen Räumen, in denen Jugendliche die Möglichkeit zu intergenerationalen und peer-bezogenen Begegnungen haben.
