ERG OFF response in frog retina: light adaptation and effect of 2‐amino‐4‐phosphonobutyrate

Abstract: The intensity-response (V/log I) function of ERG OFF response (d-wave) in dark and light adapted superfused frog eyecups was investigated before and after blockade of the retinal ON channel by 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyrate (APB). The V/log I function of the dark adapted d-wave had two distinct components, each of them consisting of an ascendent and descendent part. In eyes adapted to mesopic or photopic background the V/log I function had only one component. It was shifted to the right along the intensity axis, … Show more

“…The V/log I function of the b-and d-wave obtained under conditions favouring the activity of green rods had same peculiarities which have been described in our previous work (Popova et al 1995). The b-and d-wave V/log I curve was separated in two components, the ®rst of them reached maximal amplitude of 23 1.89 lV for the b-wave and 19 1.49 lV for the d-wave at It 5.18 log q s ±1 lm ±2 and then showed a tendency toward saturation (Fig.…”

“…The effect of the glycine-and GABAergic blockade on the green rods mediated V/log I function of the ERG waves differed in some aspects from that on the red rods mediated one. As has been shown in our previous work (Popova et al 1995), the green rods mediate the ERG responses in the range of 2.5 log units above the b-wave threshold and 1.5±2 log units above the d-wave 430 nm threshold (10 lV criterion). This range fully coincided with the intensity span of the ®rst component of the V/log I curve of the ERG waves obtained in the present study.…”

“…This enabled using the results from the first stimulus session in the test experiments as an autocontrol. The V\log I curves of the ERG ON-and OFF-responses to chromatic stimuli (Figs 1, 2, open symbols) were similar to those obtained with white stimuli (see Vitanova et al 1987, Kupenova et al 1991, Popova et al 1995. When the intensity-response curves of the ON-and OFFresponses were obtained in wide range of stimulus intensities, they could not be approximated to one and the same function.…”
