Abstract: We could reach a satisfactory improvement of visual acuity in more than 90 % of the patients fitted for the far and the reading distance. Especially in elderly, vision impaired patients significant improvements in overall quality of life and specific areas of daily living are possible.

“…This study showed that through the provision of individually fitted low vision aids, near and distance visual acuity could be improved, leading to patients regaining the ability to read, which was in line with the findings of other studies [13][14][15][16]. Not only visual acuity but also reading speed can be improved through low vision aids, which Ngyuen et al ( 2008)-as well as other studies, such as refs.…”

“…However, conventional electronic aids such as CCTV (closed circuit television) in this study were most commonly fitted in the age group of patients who were 60 years and older, showing that age and social stigmata (e.g., older patients not being able to cope as easily with handling electronic devices as children and adolescents) should not play a role in the fitting of low vision aids. Proper fitting and advice and training in handling a fitted aid, on the other hand, are important parts of low vision services [15]. This statement is further supported through the high amount of adaptive care that patients received in this study population, again emphasizing the need for low vision services.…”

[ 5 ] showed that with the use of low vision devices, satisfactory visual improvement in >90% of the cases could be attained. However, the effect of low vision devices for distance and near vision in different DR pathologies has not been studied.…”
