Centrifugal pumps are used extensively in various everyday applications. The occurrence of corrosion phenomena during operation often leads to the failure of a pump’s operating components, such as the impeller. The present research study examines the utilization of composite materials for fabricating centrifugal pump components using additive manufacturing as an effort to fabricate corrosion resistant parts. To achieve the latter two nanocomposite materials, carbon fiber reinforced polyamide and carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide were compared with two metal alloys, cast iron and brass, which are currently used in pump impeller manufacturing. The mechanical properties of the materials are extracted by performing a series of experiments, such as uniaxial tensile tests, nanoindentation and scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of the specimen’s fracture area. Then, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed using various impeller designs to determine the fluid pressure exerted on the impeller’s geometry during its operation. Finally, the maximum power rating of an impeller that can be made from such composites will be determined using a static finite element model (FEM). The FEM static model is developed by integrating the data collected from the experiments with the results obtained from the CFD analysis. The current research work shows that nanocomposites can potentially be used for developing impellers with rated power of up to 9.41 kW.

Modern-day engineering applications favor polymers and polymer composites on the grounds of their high specific properties. They can offer many different advantages compared to metals; such as high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of production, but their erosion resistance is weaker. In polymer composites, material loss occurs because of high-speed and repeated exposure to erosive particles, therefore service performance and life of the parts are adversely affected. Due to this, it is crucial to predict the particle erosion that may occur in engineering applications and to know the erosive wear behavior of the materials well. Polytetrafluoroethylene and its composites are widely used in tribological applications because of their load-carrying capacity, self-lubricating, and low-density properties, but there is inadequate literature on particle erosion behavior. In this study, particle erosion behaviors of polytetrafluoroethylene, its randomly oriented short glass fiber, and carbon particle and bronze particle-reinforced composites were investigated under different test conditions. Two different types of erosive particles (garnet and alumina) were used to present the effect of erodent type on particle erosion behavior. After particle erosion tests, surface topographies were examined by an optical profilometer, and surface morphologies were examined by scanning electron microscopy. It has been found that the type of reinforcement and the type of erodent significantly affects the particle erosion behavior of polytetrafluoroethylene and its composites.

The self-priming pump is widely used in conveying the solid-liquid two-phase flow medium. The particles in the medium erode the components, leading to structural damage and failure. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the 65ZW30-20 self-priming pump is built to study erosion characteristics and mechanisms. FLUENT, along with the Discrete Phase Model and Oka erosion model, is applied for the numerical simulation. The particle distribution, impact times and velocity, and trajectories are taken into consideration to investigate the erosion characteristics in each component. The results show that with the increase of the particle concentration, the head and efficiency decreases gradually. The volute wall and blade leading edge are the most vulnerable regions to erosion, because of a large number of impact times and high impact velocity. Also, the particles impact the front gap wall for fewer times and the hub with lower velocity, which leads to a slighter erosion. Besides, the particle trajectories indicate that some particles impact the blade suction surface and the paraxial area of the shroud, rendering considerable erosion.
