Error Concealment for Dual Frame Video Coding with Uneven Quality

Abstract: When losses occur in a transmission of compressed video, the decoder can attempt to conceal the loss by using spatial or temporal methods to estimate the missing macroblocks. We consider a multi-frame error concealment approach which exploits the uneven quality in the two reference frames to provide good concealment candidates. A binary decision tree is used to decide among various error concealment choices. The uneven quality of the reference frames provides an advantage for error concealment.

“…In [27], an optimisation algorithm was used to select between short and long term references, in order to increase the prediction distance and reduce error propagation. In the decoder side, an error concealment method was later used to take advantage of such prediction structure [28]. The use of leaky prediction is also able to achieve an exponential decay of error propagation, but coding efficiency is significantly penalised [29].…”

“…This technique works well for the random loss of MBs. Binary decision tree is used to select suitable EC algorithm along with a reference frame to conceal missing MBs in [14]. This technique is adaptive in nature, but causes a high computational complexity.…”

“…In [8] a optimization algorithm is used to select between short and long term references in order to increase the prediction distance and reduce error propagation. In the decoder side a concealment method can be used to take advantage of this prediction structure [9]. Although these methods efficiently predict the decoder distortion in case of packet loss, they rely either on interpolated reference frames or long-term references, which might dramatically decrease the coding performance.…”
